Using Symbol Font Mapping to change the way symbols appear on the screen

Version: 3.x, 4.x, 5.x - Scientific WorkPlace & Scientific Word

If certain symbols don't appear on the screen to your liking, try using the Windows Symbol font for appropriate characters. Symbol Font Mapping uses the most commonly used symbols from the Windows Symbol font in place of the corresponding symbols from the fonts supplied with the program.

If you choose Symbol Font Mapping, the Windows Symbol font characters will be used in place of the corresponding tciuni characters when you display your document on the screen or when you produce the document with File/Preview or File/Print (that is, when you don't typeset it). Symbol Font Mapping has no effect on the appearance of your document when you produce it with Typeset/Preview or Typeset/Print (that is, when you do typeset it); the LaTeX compilation is completely unaffected.

Note that the substituted characters may use a different font (such as Times Roman instead of Computer Modern) from that used in your document. Also, Greek characters may change from italics to upright at different screen resolutions; this differs with every machine and resolution.

To choose Symbol Font Mapping:

  1. From the Tools menu, choose User Setup.

  2. Choose the Font Mapping tab.

  3. Check the box labeled Use Symbol Font Mapping.

  4. Choose OK.
