How to create a grid

Version: 3.x, 4.x, 5.x - Scientific WorkPlace & Scientific Notebook

In Version 5.5, you can create a grid quickly by creating and modifying a simple 2D plot. In any version, you can create a grid by graphing a series of lines on a 2D Rectangular plot. Once you have created the plot you want, you can save it as a fragment for repeated use.

Creating a grid in Version 5.5

These steps create a 5x5 grid. Modify them as necessary to make a grid that is the size you need.

  1. In mathematics, enter the vector (-5,0,5,0).

  2. On the Compute toolbar, click the Plot 2D Rectangular button Plot 2D Rectangular button or, from the Compute menu, choose Plot 2D and then choose Rectangular.

  3. In mathematics, enter and select (0,-5) and drag it to the plot frame.

  4. In mathematics, enter and select (0,5) and drag it to the plot frame.

  5. Select the plot frame and from the Edit menu, choose Plot Properties.

  6. On the Axes tab sheet,

    1. Choose Equal Scaling Along Each Axis.

    2. Set Axes Type to Normal or Framed.

    3. Check Grid Lines and Axis Tips.

    4. Choose OK.

Now you can drag an expression to the grid.

Creating grid lines in build 2347 of Versions 4.1 and all builds of Version 5.0

  1. Toggle to math mode.

  2. Type ((-10,-10),(-10,10)).

  3. From the Compute menu, choose Plot 2D and then choose Rectangular.

  4. Select the plot and choose Properties.

  5. Choose the View tab and uncheck Default.

  6. Set the x and y intervals to -10 and 10.

  7. Choose the Items Plotted tab.

  8. In the Plot Style section, choose Line rather than Point.

  9. To add another line to the plot, click Add Item and type ((-9,-10),(-9,10)) and choose OK.

  10. Repeat step 9 to add vertical and horizontal lines to the plot until your grid is complete.

Creating grid lines in Version 3.x

  1. Toggle to math mode.
  2. Type (-10,-10),(-10,10).
  3. Choose Maple.
  4. Choose Plot 2D and then choose Rectangular.
  5. Revise the plot.
  6. Choose the Plot Components page.
  7. Make sure the plot style is Line rather than Point.
  8. To add another line to the plot, click Add Item and type (-9,-10),(-9,10) and choose OK.
  9. Repeat step 8 to add items to the plot until your grid is complete.
