Converting EndNote bibliographies to BibTeX bibliographies

Version: 3.x, 4.x, 5.x - Scientific WorkPlace & Scientific Word

SWP and SW typeset with LaTeX, which uses BibTeX to manage and include references from a bibliography database. You can convert the bibliographies you generate with EndNote to BibTeX for use in SWP and SW documents. You can download the conversion tool. Read more about it.

Once you have converted the EndNote file to BibTeX, make these two changes to each entry:

  • Move the entry key.

  • Change multiple-word keys to single word keys.

For example, a typical BibTeX entry looks like this after the conversion from EndNote:

@article{

Reform Internat. Finanzsystem,

Author = {Bernanke, Ben S. and Gertler, Mark},

Title = {Agency Costs, Net Worth, and Business Fluctuations},

Journal = {American Economic Review},

Volume = {79},

Number = {1},

Pages = {14-31},

Year = {1989} }

The second line contains the entry key, which is everything up to and including the comma:

Reform Internat. Finanzsystem,

In this form, SWP and SW do not recognize the key, so each entry must be modified to use an equivalent form. Move the key to the first line, immediately following the { so that the line reads:

@article{Reform Internat. Finanzsystem,

Then, change the key to a single, unique word. We suggest you select something convenient, perhaps using the name of the first author followed by the publication year. If you have multiples of the same author/year combination, you can add a modifier such as "a", "b", etc. Thus, you might change the sample entry key to:

Bernanke-1983,

When both these changes are complete, the entry would look like this:

@article{Bernanke-1983,

Author = {Bernanke, Ben S. and Gertler, Mark},

Title = {Agency Costs, Net Worth, and Business Fluctuations},

Journal = {American Economic Review},

Volume = {79},

Number = {1},

Pages = {14-31},

Year = {1989} }
