Characters don't appear properly with PCTeX

Version: 3.x, 4.x, 5.x - Scientific WorkPlace & Scientific Word

Problem

Characters don't appear properly when PCTeX is used to format and preview documents.

Explanation

Computer Modern fonts are included both with SWP and SW and with PCTeX. Although the two sets of fonts use the same font names, the fonts are different and use different encoding. Only one set of fonts can be installed at a time, so incompatibilities result if one product tries to use the fonts intended for the other. If the fonts for the alternate product are installed, missing or incorrect characters will appear when you typeset preview or print your document.

Solution

If you expect to use PCTeX all the time, follow the instructions below to install the PCTeX fonts into the Windows Fonts folder. If you plan to switch frequently between programs, consider creating and saving font installation batch files to handle the process.

One side effect of making this change is that the kappa symbol no longer displays in the previewer for SWP and SW, but it will be displayed in PCTeX.

  1. Remove most of the Computer Modern fonts already installed:

    1. From the Windows Control Panel, choose Fonts to open the Fonts window.

    2. Remove all fonts that begin with CM except the CMSY fonts. This table lists the fonts to remove:

      CMB10.TTF CMCSC8.TTF CMMI6.ttf CMR9.TTF CMSSDC10.TTF CMTI10.TTF
      CMBSY10.TTF CMCSC9.TTF CMMI7.ttf CMSL10.TTF CMSSI10.TTF CMTI12.TTF
      CMBX10.TTF CMDUNH10.TTF CMMI8.ttf CMSL12.TTF CMSSI12.TTF CMTI7.TTF
      CMBX12.TTF CMEX10.TTF CMMI9.ttf CMSL8.TTF CMSSI17.TTF CMTI8.TTF
      CMBX5.TTF CMFF10.TTF CMMIB10.TTF CMSL9.TTF CMSSI8.TTF CMTI9.TTF
      CMBX6.TTF CMFI10.TTF CMR10.TTF CMSLTT10.TTF CMSSI9.TTF CMTT10.TTF
      CMBX7.TTF CMFIB8.TTF CMR12.TTF CMSS10.TTF CMSSQ8.TTF CMTT12.TTF
      CMBX8.TTF CMINCH.TTF CMR17.TTF CMSS12.TTF CMSSQI8.TTF CMTT8.TTF
      CMBX9.TTF CMITT10.TTF CMR5.TTF CMSS17.TTF CMTCSC10.TTF CMTT9.TTF
      CMBXSL10.TTF CMMI10.ttf CMR6.TTF CMSS8.TTF CMTEX10.TTF CMU10.TTF
      CMBXTI10.TTF CMMI12.ttf CMR7.TTF CMSS9.TTF CMTEX8.TTF CMVTT10.TTF
      CMCSC10.TTF CMMI5.ttf CMR8.TTF CMSSBX10.TTF CMTEX9.TTF

  2. Still in the Fonts window, install the new fonts:

    1. From the File menu, choose Install New Fonts to display a new window.

    2. In the bottom left corner of the window, choose Folders.

    3. Display the fonts by browsing to the FONTS\AMS\TTF folder in the directory in which PCTeX is installed.

    4. Choose the Select All button and then choose OK.

If you receive messages that the fonts are already there, choose OK to ignore the message.

    5. Choose the FONTS\TEX\TTF folder in the PCTeX directory to display a list of fonts.

    6. Choose the Select All button and then choose OK.

If you receive messages that the fonts are already there, choose OK to ignore the message.

    7. Choose Close.
