Message: File (filename) not found

Problem

During a compilation, this message appears in the LaTeX window and in the .log file:

!LaTeX Error: File '(filename.tex)' not found.

Type X to quit or <RETURN> to proceed, or enter new name. (Default extension: tex)

Explanation

The error occurs when the compiler searches for a missing .tex file or package. When LaTeX can't find a file, it halts and asks for an alternate file name.

Solution

You can try to continue the compilation or you can cancel the compilation and try to correct the filename in your document.

  • To continue the compilation, type s or q or r and press Return.

  • To stop the compilation, type x or e and press Return.

  • To ask for help:

    1. Type h and press Return.

      LaTeX displays a new message containing standard error options:

      (c:\swp55\TCITeX\TeX\LaTeX\required\tools\h.tex
      ! The file name provided could not be found.
      Use '<enter>' to continue processing,
      'S' to scroll future errors
      'R' to run without stopping,
      'Q' to run quietly,
      or 'X' to terminate TeX
      ! .
      l.40 \errmessage{}

    2. Enter one of the options and press Return.

      The options are provided by the fileerr files installed with your system.
