How to change the swap file default factor for Windows

Version: 2.5 - Scientific WorkPlace & Scientific Word

By default, Windows allows the size of the swap file to be a maximum of four times larger than the available RAM. However, you can modify the swap file default factor in the system.ini file.

Note that although modifying the default factor may allow you to run applications that you otherwise couldn't run, it may also slow things down noticeably.

  1. Using an ASCII editor, open the system.ini file.

  2. Scroll through the file to find the [386enh] section.

  3. Find the PageOverCommit entry.

  4. Set PageOverCommit to a factor greater than 4. Valid settings are between 1 and 20.

  5. Save the file.

  6. Reboot your computer.
