Exporting SW files

Version: 2.5 - Scientific WorkPlace & Scientific Word for the Macintosh

You can export the documents you create in SW for the Macintosh to other LaTeX2e installations, with some restrictions.

The underlying TeX on each system is specific to that platform, so transparency is a relative thing. Converting between Macintosh and Windows, you need to change the format of text files. SW for the Macintosh reads DOS format files very successfully; TeX does not. Scientific Word for Windows usually reads Macintosh format files, although some document files created with SW for the Macintosh cannot be read by older versions of SW for Windows.

SW documents are exportable if you have all the style files. Our styles are freely re-distributable. Note that we also provide the SW Document Manager, which wraps all the needed style files in one, e-mailable package.

If you are using a networked system, moving document files from one platform to another via the network requires no special procedures. However, if you want to move document files from one platform to another using floppy disks, you may need to use the Macintosh PC Exchange to transfer the files to appropriately formatted disks.

You can make your document files more portable if you name them according to several constraints:

  • Limit the file name to eight characters.

  • Avoid using spaces in the file name.

  • Avoid using in the file name characters that have meaning on other platforms and for other software. These characters include the following: / & $ # _ ^% " ' { } @
