Long file names

Version: 2.5 - Scientific WorkPlace & Scientific Word

Q. I've just installed SW 2.5 on my Windows NT 3.51 system. When I try to preview, I get this error message: Cannot open DVI file filename.dvi. What's wrong and why can't I preview?

A. The previewer can't find your file. We suspect that either your file or one of the directories or subdirectories in which it resides has a name that is longer than eight characters or contains a space. Remember that Windows 95 and newer Windows NT systems often use directory names that contain spaces.

We suggest that you name all files and directories according to these constraints:

  • Limit the file name to eight characters.

  • Avoid using spaces in the file name.

  • Avoid using in the name characters that have meaning on other platforms and for other software. These characters include the following:

    / & $ # _ ^ % ~ " ' { } @
