System slows or stops during computations

Version: 3.0 - Scientific WorkPlace & Scientific Notebook

Problem

During some computations, such as solving a system of equations, the system beeps but Maple doesn't return a solution. The system seems to get slower and slower, and finally seems to cease responding at all. Repeated attempts can close down the software, sometimes without saving the active document.

Explanation

The Maple kernel included with Version 3.0 uses lots of memory. When available memory drops too far, problems like this can result.

Solution:

When you notice the software slowing down during a computation, we suggest you stop the computation (press the Stop Operation button or press Ctrl+Break) and then free up some memory following these instructions:

  1. From the Tools menu, choose User Setup.

  2. Choose the Maple Engine tab.

  3. Choose Reload Engine.

  4. Choose OK.

Try the computation again. Any definitions that you've made will be retained. You should see improved performance.
