How to connect to Mathematica under Windows 3.1 or 3.11

Version: 2.5 - Scientific WorkPlace & Scientific Word

If you're running Scientific WorkPlace 2.5 under Windows 3.1x, we recommend that you follow these steps to connect to your copy of Mathematica version 2.2.3:

  1. Install Mathematica. You must have version 2.2.3 or higher.

  2. If Scientific WorkPlace is open, close it.

  3. In your Windows directory, find the file named mathlink.ini.

    If you do not have these files, please contact our technical support staff.

  4. Make a copy of the file for safekeeping.

  5. Modify the file:

    1. Open mathlink.ini with an ASCII editor.

    2. Find three lines at the beginning of the file similar to these:

      [MathLinkProtocols]

      Protocol0=D:\WNMATH22\MLLCL`

      ProtocolName0=local

    3. Make sure the drive and directory listed in the Protocol0 line are correct for your copy of Mathematica. Do not delete the backprime (`) at the end of the line.

    4. Delete everything else in the file.

    5. Save the file as mathlink.ini.

  6. Start Scientific WorkPlace.

  7. From the Tools menu, choose User Setupand then choose Compute.

  8. In the Computational Engines area

    1. Change the Engine at Startup setting to Mathematica.

    2. Change the Active Engine setting to Mathematica .

  9. In the MathLink Parameters area, change the Protocol entry to local.

  10. Choose OK.
