Correcting print problems

Version: 3.x - Scientific Notebook

You may experience problems when you try to print your documents, often because the Windows settings for your printer aren't compatible with Scientific Notebook.

The examples below illustrate how to change the settings to solve several common problems, but they don't explain how to resolve all possible printing difficulties. If these examples don't address the printing problem you're experiencing, please contact technical support.

These examples are written for Hewlett Packard printers. If you have a printer from a different manufacturer, these examples may help you find a solution that will work for your printer. Note, however, that the appearance of the dialog boxes and settings shown below can vary greatly from printer to printer. If you cannot find the correct settings for your printer, consult your owner's manual or call the printer manufacturer.

Some characters don't appear in print

Some Windows 95 users experience problems when certain characters that appear on the screen don't appear in print. The problem results when TrueType fonts haven't been downloaded correctly to the printer. The fonts must be downloaded as bitmap soft fonts. The settings are located on the Fonts tab sheet in the HP printer settings dialog box. Follow these instructions to download the fonts correctly:

Note These instructions are specific to the HP LaserJet 5P running under Windows 95. Different HP printers may have slightly different dialog boxes, labels and options.

  1. Click the Windows Start button and choose Settings.

  2. When the Settings menu appears, choose Printers .

The printer window displays all printers installed on your system.

  3. Click the right mouse button on the icon for the printer that is printing incorrectly or use the arrow keys to select the printer.

  4. From the File menu, choose Properties.

  5. Click the Fonts tab to display the Fonts page of the HP LaserJet 5P Properties dialog box.

  6. Click the button labeled Download TrueType fonts as bitmap soft fonts.

  7. Click OK to confirm your choice and close the Hewlett Packard LaserJet 5P properties dialog box.

  8. Print your document.
