Best performance

Version: 2.5 - Scientific WorkPlace & Scientific Word

Q. How can I get the best performance from SW 2.5 on my 8-MB Windows 3.1 system?

A. If you have Windows 3.1 or 3.11 with Win 32s running on an 8-MB system, you can run SW 2.5. Our users report that you'll have fewer problems if you follow these instructions:

  1. Reduce Smartdrive to an absolute minimum when Windows is running.

    • Place the statement smartdrv 1024 256 in your autoexec.bat file to restrict the size of smartdrive to 256 K when Windows is running.

  2. Create a permanent swap file of about 15 MB. <

    • A larger temporary swap file may create more out-of-memory messages than a smaller permanent swap file.

    • You may need to alter the swap factor so that Windows creates a swap file of the correct size.

  3. Use DOS 6.2.
